We are finally advanced enough to realize that well-known myths contain evidence that their authors witnessed a high-technology civilization superior to ours. Our ‘primitive’ ancestors described what are unmistakably robots, airplanes, explosives, organ transplants, cosmic principles, etc.. They attributed this high technology to the gods, technically advanced and long-lived beings who lived on earth among them. There were only about 600 gods, and we have found no archaeological traces of their civilization. However the description of their tools, their vehicles, their knowledge, and their accomplishments is circumstantial but irrefutable evidence of their existence. 

Before they left, the gods asked us not to do stupid things, not to hit each other, and not to multiply like rabbits. For thousands of years we have done nothing else, so that now we are totally addicted to such abysmal behaviour. It's unfortunate that man’s incredible intellectual achievements are more than cancelled out by his moral imbecility.
